Speaking of deer...I saw a doe running around the property this morning like a chicken with its head cut off --until I noticed that a buck was in hot pursuit. She was really frantic, at one point taking cover on the patio just outside my office. That's when we both saw the buck. He was on a mission and took off after her like a shot. They both disappeared beyond the "back 40." Kids thesedays...

Our "back 40" is a couple of acres of land we own behind the house. Mostly open space with some fruit trees, berry bushes, ground hogs... It usually refers to a large piece of un-spoiled acreage.

edit: it originated as acres, but like dontcry says above, it isn't often used literally anymore.
